THE accolades continue to roll in for the Bahamas’ top female basketball player at the high school level.
An historic senior season for Lashann Higgs at Cedar Ridge High School in Houston, Texas, has resulted in a player of the year honour in the state of Texas and another national recognition.
Higgs was named District 13-6A Most Valuable Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and was also named a Jordan Brand All-American. She led her Raiders to a 30-3 record overall, and an undefeated 14-0 in her district.
The Harbour Island native averaged 27 points, 9.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.6 steals per game.
Her highlight of the season came when she recorded her first career triple double - 33 points, 16 rebounds and 10 steals. She scored a season-high 45 points to lead her team to a win in the district opener and went on to score a total of 385 points in District 13-6A play.
She shot 60 per cent from the field and just over 30 per cent from beyond the arch. She also led the Raiders to an outright District 13-6A championship when she finished with 26 points in a 64-37 win.
In January, she became the first Bahamian player to be named a McDonald’s All-American and recently added the Jordan Brand All-American honour to her résumé.
The Jordan Brand Classic is a high school All-Star basketball game played annually in April. This year’s event, in its 14th edition, will be hosted in Brooklyn, New York.
The game’s rosters feature the best and most highly recruited high school boys and girls in the senior class. The game takes its name from the chief organiser, Jordan Brand, a division of Nike.
The 26 players are routinely selected from the top 100 players as ranked by numerous scouting services.
Higgs has already committed to join the University of Texas Longhorns next fall and is currently ranked No. 6 in the espnW HoopGurlz rankings for the Class of 2015.
A member of the Frank Rutherford Elite Development Foundation, Higgs also is an excellent student with a 3.5 GPA.
