Fire rips through former City Market warehouse

POLICE were called to the scene of a structural fire at the old City Market warehouse on the East West Highway yesterday.

According to Fire Chief Superintendent Walter Evans, police received a call about the fire just after 3pm.

When officers arrived, they saw flames coming from the roof of the building.

Officers entered the structure and were able to extinguish the fire, Supt Evans said. Firefighters were on the scene for nearly five hours, he said.

The building was not occupied and was not powered by electricity.

Supt Evans said police were not sure about the cause of the fire, but had not ruled our arson.

He added that there was a concern about fumes from an ammonia tank that was on the property. As a result, five officers were sent to hospital for treatment.

So, question, if this building is the last physical structure of sorts that has any value to assist the shafted CM employees and pension fund...could be someone's final statement to say now you ain't got NOTHING...

A certain member of our Real Estate Assets Valuation team calls this a "Lebanese Bankruptcy". In the city of our bank's headquarters, many Lebanese food joints get deeply in debt to the bank. The owners don't have a chance in hell of paying off the operating debts. To escape this untenable situation, they leave a pot of boiling oil on the stove "accidentally" overnight. The insurance money enables them to get out of debt.

Ammonia tank? Seems like some officers were overcome by fumes. What if they had exploded? Poisonous ammonia fumes released into the air harming unsuspecting Bahamians. Have we learned nothing from the Rubis incident (just up the street actually)? How many more 'accidents' are just waiting to happen in this country?

Is this the building they were trying to fool (/collaborate with) NIB into buying

Sure is! Guess since they couldn't swing a government buy out other options were considered...

.................. the owners burnt the building down.................... ????????????

Anything is possible...guess it also depends on if they have insurance or not. The building was stripped so bare there really was not much to insure. Or they could just be giving the big middle finger to the former City Market employees. Pure speculation of course. Could very well have been some drug junkies or scrap metal people up to some mischief in there.
