Police probe US man’s drowning

POLICE are investigating the death of an American man who drowned while swimming in western New Providence on Sunday.

According to reports, shortly after 3pm, the victim and a woman were swimming in waters near a resort at South Ocean Beach, when the man became unconscious.

Despite extensive CPR efforts, police said the man was pronounced dead at the scene by Emergency Management Services personnel. An autopsy will be preformed to determine the exact cause of death. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members.

In other crime news, a 54-year-old American man from New Jersey is in custody after he was arrested for possession of dangerous drugs on Sunday.

According to reports, shortly before noon, officers from the Tourism Policing Unit acting on information went to a cruise ship moored at Prince George Wharf, where they found the suspect in possession of a quantity of marijuana.

The suspect was taken into custody and is expected to appear in court early this week to be formally charged.
