Permits at the Pointe

EDITOR, The Tribune

Public Works building control inspectors stops work at The Pointe project at The British Colonial Hilton ... Wow! I was wondering when they would.

You know the Ministry of Labour offices are right next door and no one seemed to see what was going on. If as seemingly the official story goes, the developers/contractor was only permitted to commence site preparation work why then clearly on the site is there a Town Planning Permit Number?

Site preparation work – did it include the approval of the drilling and pouring of the pilings and also of the design of the rebar for the pillars?

Like a lot of occurrences around town – as simple as Town Planning permits in subdivisions - there is a massive lack of basic adherence to the regulations, to the extent that I have to suggest that it is a free-for-all, and based on who you know, you can get away with anything, including building without any Town Planning application.

There is a serious need, for an independent inquiry into the practice and the compliance of the regulations and the operation of The Town Planning Board.

The City of Nassau Special Town Planning Board is another interesting agency. Many ask did the design of The Pointe project obtain that Board’s approval, or was it pushed from Cabinet and rubber-stamped?

To many the architecture certainly clashes with the colonial vernacular of the City of Nassau, within which the Hilton site falls.
