A well-known Family Island resort said yesterday it was “amazed and incredibly thankful” that it had sustained very little damage during Hurricane Joaquin.
Susan Barcham, corporate affairs director for the Oak Bay Marine Group, operator of Long Island’s Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort, told Tribune Business: “We are amazed and incredibly thankful that Cape Santa Maria sustained relatively little damage during Hurricane Joaquin.
“Most importantly, we have had initial reports that all of our staff members are safe. The property has lost some trees and screens, and the beach was quite eroded, but all things considered we were incredibly fortunate. It is truly hard to believe.
“Our villas and bungalows, and the main Beach House, are all still standing. The Cape closes every year for the months of September and October, so no guests were on site”
Ms Barcham added: “Having spent 48 hours tracking the hurricane, it quickly became evident that it was an absolute monster just hovering over Long Island.
“The duration combined with the force of the wind and the high tides were certainly a recipe for disaster, and we were deeply concerned for everyone there. Our hearts go out to the people on the southern part of Long Island and the other islands that were hardest hit.”
Ms Barcham extended thanks to Long Island MP Loretta Butler Turner and her team
for their relief efforts.
“We have spoken with her, and Cape Santa Maria will be donating a substantial amount of essential items and supplies to assist in the relief effort on Long Island,” she added.
“We will also be housing some members of the relief team who are volunteering their time and materials. We understand that it is currently difficult to reach all of the people who are in need. We pray that they can be reached expediently so they can take proper care of their families, as they begin to slowly re-build and overcome this devastation.”
