The Pointe permits

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Bahamian architectural and engineering professions are quietly in an uproar because, notwithstanding all the construction, dredging, land reclamation, etc, ongoing around the British Colonial under the control of the Chinese government, not one single building permit has been issued by the Bahamas government’s Ministry of Works in respect of these projects. It is not even clear whether any permits have even been formally applied for.

The law provides...and it has been enforced on locals more than once...that such presumptuously premature work should cease and desist forthwith, and all fruits of their efforts to date should be demolished, pending architectural and engineering review of detailed plans, and issuance of building permits approving said plans.

This company is extremely dangerous. They seem to have made no effort to understand anything about the Bahamas, it's customs, rules or culture. This is a company that would have zero problems eliminating everything Bahamian. That shiny ill-fitting structure in the center of historic Nassau is only the tip of the iceberg.

This is just the beginning. Can you imagine what power and influence these "new Bahamians" will have in our country in the next 5 - 10 years? They are out of control now. Is it possible to be more so?

I believe our backlog in issuing passports is because our machines are now in the Chinese Embassy, running night and day. Before the next election we may have +500,000 citizens.

Bahamian architectural and engineering professions are quietly in an uproar

And that is exactly why nothing is changing in this country - everybody who knows better is remaining quiet.

Thisisours: My friend to the contrary, the Chinese have studied, and learned, everything there is to know about the Bahamas and have acted accordingly. YOU PAY FOR WHAT YOU WANT AND YOU PAY THE APPROPRIATE PEOPLE WHO WILL GET IT FOR YOU. Steffan Perry Christie handled all of these mundane tasks for the Chinese Construction America ( Bahamas ) Limited and he simply has not had a chance to advise the MOW as to what the situation is. Some brave fool in the MOW has had the temerity of spirit to call into question the fact that all of this construction is going on without any approval whatsoever. If this man catches even the slightest amount of flack for this, then that must be the signal for Bahamians, of every colour and party affiliation, to go to their House of Assembly and let the chips fall where they may.

I agree with the letter writer. If you did not get a permit or inspection for a stage in construction, then you have to tear it down and start over. Why is everyone just saying the permits were not obtained but nobody is saying that it should be torn town and the contracted made to start over. If the building is not inspected you have no way of knowing if the proper amount of steel went into the foundation, etc. This is catastrophic and somebody is clearly being paid under the table to look the other way. #typicalthirdworldstyle
