Grace becomes Atlantic season's seventh named tropical storm

GRACE, the seventh named tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, formed on Saturday and is forecast to strengthen over the next 24 hours as it moves west.

On Sunday morning the US National Hurricane Centre reported that Grace was 390 miles south west of the Cape Verde islands with maximum sustained winds near 40mph.

Forecasters say the storm, which is moving forward at 14mph, is strengthening and could become a strong tropical storm early this week before weakening due to wind shear as it gets into waters east of the Lesser Antilles. Grace is still more than five days away from those islands and poses no threat for the time being.

In an average year, the seventh Atlantic named storm forms by September 16.

Tropical Depression Fred is moving north with maximum sustained winds of 35mph and on Sunday morning was located about 1,310 miles south west of The Azores. Fred is expected to turn north east later on Sunday with no significant changes in strength over the next 48 hours.
