THE Eight Mile Rock High School is facing a serious teacher and staff shortage at the institution, which is the only public secondary school in West Grand Bahama.

The Tribune was told that there is need for two administrators – a senior master and senior mistress - in additon to two technical teachers for carpentry and auto-mechanics, and teachers for biology, history and geography.

Bahamas Union of Teachers Vice-President Quinton LaRoda said that some of the teachers are being processed by the Ministry of Education.

Last week, Principal Ivan Butler issued an appeal to the Ministry of Education to address the shortage, and noted that it was affecting the education of students at the school.

Mr Butler noted that students are placed at a great disadvantage in the area of science.

“We have lost five science teachers in the past two years,” he said recently.

He has also noted that due to lack of science teachers, the school’s head boy was transferred to St Georges’ High School in Freeport by his mother.

Mr Butler said that it appears that schools in Freeport are better staffed with teachers and administrators than EMRHS.
