CHAMPION Amateur Boxing Club is set to stage one of its longest running events to showcase what director Ray Minus Jr calls the “future of boxing.”
“We are very dedicated to the programme of boxing, we have developed many great Bahamian boxers but this is a new generation,” Minus Jr said. “They will have the opportunity to represent the country on the world stage and we want people to get to know them right now as they prepare for the 2020 Olympics.”
One of the top amateur tournaments of the year, the L Garth Wright Golden Gloves boxing tourney is scheduled to be hosted at the Wulff Road Boxing Square 7pm September 26. The main event will feature Filipino native Reggie Danlag vs local talent Daedae Eugena.
“Both fighters are roughly at the same experience level so we expect a great fight. They just met each other for the first time although they train in the same gym,” Minus Jr said.
The event will also showcase a highly anticipated matchup between Michael Gomez and Emmanuel Rolle. Other top fighters on the 10-bout card include Lennox Bryce and Jonathan Cox.
Minus Jr calls the 15-year-old Bryce one of the most dedicated fighters he has ever seen.
“It’s rare that you find someone with this level of dedication to being great. He works hard and he wants to be great,” Minus Jr said.
“I think he is fast tracked as one of the next big names in boxing for the Bahamas. He has been with us since he was 12 and the progress he has made over the past three years has been amazing and we look forward to him being there for 2020.”
Awards will be presented in the primary and junior divisions for best fight, most improved boxer, most outstanding boxer and the most coveted prize, the L Garth Wright Sr Trophy.
Minus Jr said he expects the trend of the tournament’s success to continue for this edition of the Golden Gloves.
“L Garth Wright was a great promoter and someone so very important to the Bahamian boxing game,” Minus Jr said. “Always a straight forward person and because doing business with him was always a pleasure we decided to name the tournament after him and we have continued this for more than two decades.”
