SPANISH Wells and St Anne’s Bluewaves emerged as the boys’ and girls’ champions respectively in the Bahamas Softball Federation’s Austin ‘King Snake’ Knowles National Softball Tournament that was played at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex over the weekend.
The tournament returned after taking a break last year due to Hurricane Joaquin that devastated some of the southern islands like Long Island.
In the boys’ championship game on Saturday night, Spanish Wells knocked off the NGM 9-3, while St Anne’s routed the CR Walker Knights 11-1. The bronze medal in the boys’ division went to CR Walker and the girls was won by NGM.
• Here’s a summary of the championship games:
Spanish Wells 9, NGM 3: Carlos Taylor went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and Sonnel Duverle was also 1-for-2 with two runs batted in (RBI) and scored another run to lead Spanish Wells to the boys’ championship title.
Keano Cartwright was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Nicholas Cartwright was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored as NGM had to settle for the silver.
Kade Roberts was the winning pitcher and Enrico Wells was tagged with the loss.
St Anne’s 11, CR Walker 1: Sophia Cartwright was 1-for-1 with two RBI and two runs scored and Monet Cartwright went 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored to pace the Bluewaves to the girls’ championship crown.
Gia Minus had the only hit and scored the only run for CR Walker as they picked up the silver medal. Taylor Cartwright was the winning pitcher and Elyah Johnson suffered the loss.
During the opening ceremonies, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Dr Daniel Johnson said they are looking at taking the tournament to Eleuthera - known as the capital of softball in the country - in their bid to revitalise the sport on that island.
