‘BB’ wins long jump at Tiger Track Classic

NATIONAL record holder Bianca ‘BB’ Stuart, getting ready to come home to compete in the second Chris Brown Bahamas Invitational on Saturday, led a group of Bahamians in action at various track and field meets over the weekend, including Shaquania Dorsett, Danielle Gibson and Carlisa Russell as they all posted victories in their specialties.

Stuart, competing unattached in the women’s long jump in the Tiger Track Classic at the Auburn University in Auburn, soared 6.76 metres or 22-feet, 2 1/4-inches to pick up the win.

Her nearest rival was Bria Matthews, a freshman from Georgia Tech, who did 6.24m. Stuart’s jump was just over the legal wind reading of 2.0 at 2.2.

Teray Smith, a junior at Auburn University, was second in the men’s 200 metres in a time of 21.01 seconds. The winning time was 20.49 by Shota Izuka of Mizuno.

And Smith’s Auburn team-mate Xavier Coakley, in his freshman year, clocked 54.26 for 10th in the men’s 400m hurdles.

Chich Chen, competing unattached, won the event in 51.18.

In the women’s sprints, Carifta medallist Janae Ambrose, competing in her freshman year at Auburn University, got third in the 100m in 11.69 seconds, just ahead of Tayla Carter, who came in fourth in 11.80. Veteran Jamaican sprinter Aileen Bailey, competing unattached, won the event in 11.62.

Carter, a senior at Western Carolina, also competed in the 200m where she was seventh in 24.18. Deja Parrish, a sophomore at Clemson, took the tape in 23.60.

Talia Thompson, a junior at Southern Mississippi, was 16th in the women’s 400m hurdles in 1:04.05. The winning time was 58.58 by Sashel Brown, a junior at Auburn.

And in the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at the UCLA Drake Stadium in Los Angeles, Grand Bahamian Shaquania Dorsett clocked 54.01 to take the tape in the women’s 400m. Nicole Leach, competing unattached, was second in 54.48.

D’Mitry Charlton, a sophomore at Florida State, was third in the men’s 400m hurdles in 54.37. AJ Boully, a sophomore at Utah State, won the race in 51.62.

At the Pepsi Invitational at the Hayward Field, in Portland, Oregon, Danielle Gibson soared 13.08m (42-11) to clinch the win in the women’s triple jump. Her best effort came on her second attempt as she held of Sasha Wells from Oregon, who did 12.96m (42-6 1/4) for second.

Gibson, representing Penn State, also participated in the long jump where she was fifth with 5.89m (19-4).

At the West Texas A&M Classic, Carlisa Russell of Wayland Baptist clocked 1:01.72 for her victory in the women’s 400m hurdles and she was second in the 100m hurdles in 14.73 behind West Texas’ Victoria Rausch, who finished in 14.47.

Alfredo Smith of Barton County was third in the men’s long jump wirth 6.69m (21-11 1/2).

At the Hurricane Alumni Invitational at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, Racquel Williams, competing for Pittsburgh, was second in the women’s shot put with a toss of 14.12m (46-4). Nikki Okwelogu of Harward won with 17.08m (56-0 1/2). Ashley Oembler, competing for the College of the Bahamas, fouled out.

Williams was also second in the discus with 47.24m (155-0) as she again trail Okwelogu, the winner with 54.69m (179-5). Oembler came in seventh with 42.36m (139-0.

In the women’s triple jump, Tamara Myers got second with 13.09m (42-11 1/2) in the women’s triple jump that was won by Laura Samuel, unattached, with 13.71m (44-11 3/4).

Adrian Griffith, competing for Tru Fit Athletics, raced to a second place finish in the men’s 100m in 10.30 as American Walter Dix, competing unattached, won in 10.03. Yorick Dean, competing for the College of the Bahamas, was 26th in 10.95 and team-mate Jessi-Mar Wilson got 54th in 11.59.

Lamar Delancy, competing unattached, was fifth in the men’s triple jump with 15.12m (49-7 1/4) as Fabian Florant of the Netherlands took the title with 16.23m (53-3).

Kenya Culmer, in the women’s high jump, got fifth with 1.65m (5-5) with Dakota Dailey-Harris of Miami winning with 1.85m (6-0 3/4). COB’s Celine Thompson came in 8th at 1.60m (5-3) and Deneisha Bagot got 11th with 1.55m (5-1).

Grand Bahamian Shakeitha Henfield was seventh in the women’s 400m in 55.81. Shakima Wimbley of Miami was the champion in 51.62.

Henry Delauze, competing for Miami, was 12th in the men’s 200m in 21.50 as Dix got the double in 20.25. COB’s Yorick Dean was 34th in 22.07, Dennis Williamson was 34th in 22.07 and Jessi-Mar Wilson got 59th in 22.83.

Williamson also competed in the men’s 400m where he was 14th in 49.26.

Blayre Fernander, the other member of the COB team competing at the meet, was 17th in the men’s high jump with 1.85m (6-0 3/4).

And at the LSU Tiger Invitational, Purdue Boilermakers’ junior sprinter Carmiesha Cox ran 11.54 in the women’s 100m for fifth. In the 200m, Cox did 23.47, just 0.14 of a second off her own school record, fox sixth place. She also ran in the 4x100m relay team.
