ALTHOUGH he didn’t play the full season, Bahamas men’s national team player Byron Ferguson has helped the Foinikas Syrou volleyball team advance to the championships of the Greece Volleyball League.
They are scheduled to play the series starting tonight against Poak, a team consisting of USA national team player David Lee and at least two Cuban national team players.
“I expect to win because we have beaten this team twice this year but they do have a team of experienced players from the USA and Cuba, who are also gold medallists in the Olympics among other great achievements in the sport,” said Ferguson in a brief interview with The Tribune over the weekend.
“I’m just looking for a good fight. I think we have had the best home court advantage all year so hopefully our fans help us pull this one out. We begin play at home on Tuesday.”
Foinikas Syrou, according to Ferguson, is coming off a big win during the semi-finals and they hope that they can carry the momentum over to the finals.
“I am very proud of the team right now. We finished the season in third place and the team we played in the semi-finals is the only team we haven’t beaten for the year, so it felt good to beat them when it counts,” he said.
As for his individual play, Ferguson said he was quite pleased, considering that he didn’t play the entire season.
“I am satisfied with my performance this season and especially here in the playoffs,” he said.
“I finished as the third best middle blocker in the league and I didn’t play every game of the season. I was third in hitting percentage and finished sixth in blocking so hopefully I play well in the final and finish the season off strong.”
Ferguson, the only Bahamian currently playing volleyball on the professional level, is the son of former veteran women’s national team volleyball player Margaret Albury.
