Central Eleuthera water pressure set to be restored by Friday night

AFTER a week of low water pressure on Central Eleuthera, the Water and Sewerage Corporation (WSC) expects to restore pressure by Friday night.

In a statement released on Thursday night, the corporation estimated that repairs to damaged equipment and the Naval Base desalination plant will be completed by late evening.

The corporation apologised to customers on the island for the extended reduction in the level of service.

"Initially supplies in Central Eleuthera were interrupted on Sunday, July 31, 2016, " the statement read, "when the Corporation’s 8” transmission main which serves the Gregory Town and Hatchet Bay area was damaged by a third party. This was repaired the same day and re-pressurisation would have normally occurred over the following 24 hours.

"Unfortunately however, the next day (August 1, 2016), a catastrophic failure occurred at the Naval Base desalination Plant, resulting in reduced production capacity."

The statement continued: "Emergency efforts were made to effect the necessary repairs; however further challenges were encountered and remedial actions remain in progress."

WSC underscored that the corporation has taken steps to mitigate the low supply by diverting resources from North Eleuthera to supplement the reduced capacity in Central Eleuthera.

"Customers in Central Eleuthera from Gregory Town in the north to Savannah Sound in the south will be affected," the statement read.

"All other systems on Eleuthera remain activated.  Supplies in the North may however suffer reduced pressures for short periods while water is diverted further south."

Cutomers can visit the corporation's website www.wsc.com.bs, or its Facebook Page for updates on the corrective works and restoration of supply.  Customers are also invited to email their concerns and/or feedback to help@wsc.com.bs or call toll free number at (242) 300 0150.

It is now Saturday afternoon and there is still no water in Central Eleuthera. We have not had low pressure since Monday - we have had NO pressure since Monday morning. The supply to households appears to have been turned off. We have been hauling water from standpipes located in the settlements along Queen's Highway. Water trucks are delivering water from elsewhere on the island to businesses. Aside from the Thursday post on the WSC Facebook page, which has been reproduced in the media, there has been no information. Actually the Facebook post contains no useful information. Even the prediction of completed repairs was inaccurate and there is no follow up. The 2010 Eleuthera census revealed that at least 90% of the households on Eleuthera use the government water supply. A island with ambitions of greater opportunities for its youth needs a reliable water supply.

Sunday morning and still no water at all in Central Eleuthera. Still collecting water at standpipes. No word from WSC.
