THERE are several events scheduled to celebrate Majority Rule Day this weekend.
Sunday, January 10, is Majority Rule Day, which marks the 49th anniversary of the first government that the majority of the country elected on a one man one vote basis. The holiday will be observed on Monday.
The three-day ‘All-for-One Regatta’ at Montagu will kick off the state sponsored activities for the holiday.
Prime Minister Perry Christie will open the event on Saturday.
The regatta is in memory of regatta consultant and racing legend “King Eric” Gibson.
At 7pm Saturday, there will be a free live concert in Rawson Square featuring the music of Freddie Munnings Sr, the late owner of the Cat and the Fiddle night club, highlighting his songs about the city of Nassau. Governor General Dame Marguerite Pindling and Mr Christie are expected to attend.
On Sunday, there will be a ceremony marking the day with the laying of a wreath at the tomb of the late Sir Lynden Pindling by Dame Marguerite in St Agnes Cemetery on Nassau Street.
Each month over the following year there will be a special event dedicated to the commemoration of Majority Rule Day leading up to a grand event to mark the 50th anniversary in January 2017.
