GEORGE Washington Colonials senior forward Jonquel Jones was named the Ann Meyers Drysdale Women’s National Player of the Week for games played January 4-10, the US Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) announced yesterday.
Tabbed the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on Monday for the fourth time this season and programme-record 12th time in her career, Jones averaged a double-double with 21.0 points and 16.0 rebounds while adding 2.5 assists and 2.0 blocks in GW’s wins over A-10 rivals Rhode Island and Dayton.
A candidate for the USBWA’s Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Year award, as well as the John R Wooden Award and the Naismith Trophy, Jones tallied 19 points, 17 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in GW’s 68-52 victory over URI on Wednesday.
The Freeport, Bahamas, native connected on 6-of-9 from the floor and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line.
Jones then notched her 13th double-double of the season with 23 points and 15 rebounds in GW’s 62-61 win at Dayton on Sunday. She made 2-of-3 from long distance, including the game-winning 3-pointer with 1:19 remaining, and she secured the rebound on the Flyers’ go-ahead field goal try in the closing seconds to seal the victory.
The nation’s leading rebounder with 15.2 boards per game, Jones also ranks second in the A-10 in scoring (17.3 ppg) and blocked shots (2.7 bpg).
This marks Jones’ second USBWA National Player of the Week honour, as she was also recognised on February 10, 2015.
All Division I conference players of the week are eligible for the national award.
