WITH the CARIFTA Games fast approaching, the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations is hoping that the athletes will start making the qualifying standards to go to Grenada.
Over the weekend at the Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium, the T-Bird Flyers, headed by Foster Dorsett, held the first full fledged track and field meet and some outstanding performances were turned in.
For the second consecutive meet, Shaun Miller, competing in the boys’ under-15 division, soared over the under-18 qualifying height of 1.90 metres or 6-feet, 2 3/4-inches by winning with a leap of 2.00m (6-6 3/4). His arch rival Benjamin Stubbs also surpassed the qualifying mark with his second place finish of 1.95m (6-4 3/4).
Their performances surpassed that of the first two finishers in the under-18 division where Kyle Alcine of the Ambassadors won with 1.85m (6-0 3/4) and was followed by Stony Duncanson of Leap Of Faith with 1.80m (5-10 3/4).
Although she didn’t get the qualifying mark of 56.00 seconds, Club Monica’s Megan Moss ran away from the field in the girls’ under-16 division to easily win in an impressive time of 56.49, the fastest time by all female quarter-milers. Her nearest rival was Rochelle Tibby of High Performance in 1:02.64. Bredia Edgecombe of the Kenya Knights was third in 1:02.68. Moss, who represented Club Monica, paid a price with her performance as she had to be aided off the track after twisting her left ankle just as she crossed the finish line.
Marissa White of Club Monica won the under-18 race in 59.05, followed by Alexya Sawyer of Quick Step Track in 59.69 and Samara Mitchell of Fast Forward was third in 1:00.93. The open women’s race was won by Mica Evans of Club Monica in 1:02.85. Alicia Morris, of Bahamas High Performance, was second in 1:05.61 and Breanna Pratt of Bahamas Speed Dynamics was third in 1:07.68.
On the men’s side. Bradley Dormers of Bahamas Speed Dynamics took the tape in the open 400 in 49.78. Ricardo Richardson of the Kenya Knights was second in 50.48 and Oral Rolle of Club Monica Athletics was third in 50.78. Bronson Rolle Rolle of High Performance won the under-18 400 in 50.22 over his team-mate Edward Gayle, who did 51.86 for second. Benny Damus of Bahamas Speed Dynamics was third in 52.02.
In the sprint events, the performances were spread around.
Samson Colebrooke of Swift Athletics won the open men’s 100m in 10.74, Kaylea Albury of Star Trackers won the open women in 12.63, Johnathan Smith of Fast Track took the under-18 boys race in 10.96, Sasha Wells of Club Monica took the under-18 girls race in 12.65, Adrian Curry, also of Club Monica, won the under-16 boys race in 10.98, Tylar Lightbourne of Fast Forward won the under-16 race in 12.75, Devon Johnson of Alliance Athletics won the under-14 boys race in 12.27 and Anthaya Charlton of Star Trackers took the under-14 girls race in 13.05.
The longer 200m race saw Jessi-mae Wilson win the open men’s race in 22.17. Mica Evans of Club Monica was the winner of the open women’s race in 25.99. Johnathan Smith of Fast Track took the under-18 boys race in 22.45 and Devine Parker of Bahamas High Performance was the winner of the girls under-18 race in 24.49. Adrian Curry got his second win in the under-16 boys race in 22.70 and Sandra Mitchell of Fast Forward took the girls under-16 race in 26.06, Devon Johnson, Devon got another under-14 boys win in the half-lapper in 25.52 and Paige Stuart of Sun Blazer pulled a win over Anthaya Charlton in the girls under-14 race in 27.08. Charlton did 27.33 for second.
On the field, a showdown was scheduled between Ryan Ingraham of Leap of Faith and Jamal Wilson, the latest Bahamian to clear 7-7 or higher in the men’s high jump. Wilson, who the week before at the Odd Distance Meet did the qualifying mark for the Olympic Games, withdrew before the start after he felt a slight twitch. Ingraham went on to win the event with a leap of 2.15m (7-0 1/2).
Edward Kemp, competing for RC Athletics, had another big meet, winning the open men’s discus with 42.11m (138-2) and the javelin with 56.59m (185-8). Serena Brown also got a double, surpassing the CARIFTA Games qualifying standard in the open women’s discus with a toss of 48.39m (158-9) after she fell short in winning the shot put with 12.44m (40-9 3/4) that was short of the standard.
And two former collegiate athletes now back home were victorious as Kenya Culmer of Leap Of Faith won on fewer knockdowns against Deneisha Bagot of the College Of The Bahamas after they both did 1.65m (5-5), while Andros native Tamara Myers of Jumpers inc. won the open women’s triple jump with 13.45m (44-1 1/2).
