THE Bahamas Judo Federation stands poised to grow the Bahamas’ participation in the Olympic sport of judo to national and international prominence and has just released its strategic vision for the next four years.
After the building of a new national training centre and a successful ongoing pilot at RM Bailey - where judo has become a part of the curriculum for Grades 10 and 11 - the BJF is ready to implement several other initiatives.
Judo has been around in the Bahamas since the 1960s but has only emerged as a competitive sport in the past few years. There are judo clubs on the islands of Nassau, Abaco and Bimini and an active tournament circuit.
Bahamian athletes have won various regional tournaments and Cynthia Rahming is on the senior circuit vying for an Olympic bid. The strategic plan largely focuses on cadets, those persons born in 2000, 2001, 2002 as they will be eligible for CARIFTA 2017 and the Commonwealth Youth Games 2017 should the Bahamas win the bid.
The National Training Centre is located at Holy Family Catholic Church on Robinson Road and is offering full scholarships for cadets. Interested persons should contact Bahamas Judo Federation at AllStarBahamas@gmail.com
