A MAN who assaulted a woman and led officers on a high-speed car chase through New Providence endangering the lives of several road users was shot by police on Sunday night. He is now in hospital under heavy police guard.
Around 9pm, police received a report of a man "beating" a woman at a home on Augusta and Ferguson Streets and when officers arrived, the man jumped into a dark coloured Infiniti car and sped off. Police gave chase and ordered the suspect to stop but he refused, driving recklessly at a high speed through several communities in New Providence.
At times during the chase, police tried to stop the suspect, who collided with several vehicles, but he refused to respond. He continued driving recklessly east on to Bernard Road where he collided with a passing vehicle. In order to protect the lives of other drivers and pedestrians on the road police shot the suspect, who finally crashed into a utility pole.
The suspect was rushed to hospital where he is detained in stable condition under heavy police guard.
