THE Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) and Bahamas Olympic Committee (BOC) are mourning the loss of another outstanding Bahamian track and field athlete.
Sprinter Kevin Johnson passed away yesterday at the Rand Memorial Hospital in Grand Bahama.
Johnson was one of the country’s top junior sprinters in the 1970s, capturing the Florida State School Championships 100 and 200 metre titles in 1966. He went on to anchor the men’s 4 x 100 metre relay team at the 1968 Olympic Games.
“Johnson was quite talented. He was coached locally by the great Henry Crawford, who lived near to him in the Pond, and was a member of the Pioneer’s Sporting Club, with the likes of Mike Sands and Walter Calender,” said track and field historian Alpheus “Hawk” Finlayson.
“As the anchor of the 1968 Olympic 4x100m relay team, Johnson did not get an opportunity to show his worth due to Tommy’s hamstring pull.”
Johnson will be sadly missed by the track and field fraternity.
