CANDIDATE Master Nathan Smith went unbeaten this past weekend and cruised to a gold medal in the CARIFTA Chess Championships in St Croix, US Virgin Islands.
Smith, 11, competed in a under-12 age category that featured 22 competitors from seven Caribbean countries.
He never trailed in the seven-round contest, beating each of his opponents with the sole exception of a fifth-round draw against Aruba.
It was Smith’s second career CARIFTA gold in as many tries, having won the under-10 age category two years ago in Martinique.
He also struck gold in the 2013 Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Youth Festival in Costa Rica – a feat that earned him the official title of candidate master, awarded by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
Clearly the top under-12 chess talent in the Caribbean, Smith looks forward to competing this summer when Venezuela hosts the next CAC Youth Festival.
