WHILE the boys teams are booked for the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association’s (GSSSA) baseball championship game on Friday at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex, the girls are jockeying for their softball finals spots.
The GSSSA is going through its elimination process this week and will be picking up again today at 4pm as the teams try to secure their berths in the finals on Friday.
Rattlers 14
Mystic Marlins 10
Benjelin Becage scored three runs and Latavia Braynen held Doris Johnson’s bats at bay from the mound as CI Gibson stayed alive in the senior girls division.
“I felt our team played excellent today, better than any other game,” Braynen said. “We could have played even better and beat them by more runs, but it was good to get the win. We just have to work on our defence and holding onto the ground balls and the fly balls.”
M Dawkins suffered the loss for the Mystic Marlins.
Stingrays 16
Timberwolves 3
In a lop-sided affair, Toni Lee got the job done on the mound, striking out five batters and holding Anatol Rodgers’ bats in check as she kept CV Bethel in the hunt in the senior girls division.
“We showed good sportsmanship, we hustled out on the field and we proved that we wanted the game more than they did,” Lee said. “We had a lot of errors on the infield, including myself, but once we can work on it, we will perform much better.”
Lee said she wasn’t surprised at the final outcome, but it was just to prepare them for the rest of the games going into the championship.
Aaliyah Ferguson scored to lead their offensive attack.
Timberwolves 9
Golden Eagles 8
Anatol Rodgers came from an 8-5 deficit to score four runs in the third inning to win a close encounter with LW Young to stay alive in the junior girls division.
Eilise Curling was the winning pitcher and both Jade Wallace and Jarinique Thompson scored two runs apiece.
Sharks 15
Lions 1
Phillesh Major produced another stellar performance on the mound as SC McPherson devoured HO Nash to remain well placed in the junior girls division.
“It was a good game. I think our girls came prepared to play today,” said Sharks’ coach Ingrid Sears-Henfield. “We took advantage of the errors that HO Nash made. It made our job that much easier. “
As they move on, Sears-Henfield said who ever they face in the next round, they will be prepared for the challenge.
