THE Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) and United States security counterparts are taking part in Exercise Marlin Shield - training operations aimed at enhancing the country’s capabailities - this month in The Bahamas.
Aided by US Northern Command and US Special Operations Command North, the exercise allows the RBDF to practice interoperability and bilateral operations through maritime and land-based training at remote locations throughout the archipelago. This engagement is designed to enhance the Defence Force’s capabilities and competencies in national security initiatives with its regional partners for an improved maritime domain presence within its area of responsibility.
“The geographically dispersed island nation of The Bahamas is a key transshipment point for goods, both licit and illicit, entering the US and creates challenges for Bahamians in enforcing sovereignty and responding to security threats,” said a US Department of Defense spokesperson. Marlin Shield aims to actively exercise ways to combat these challenges hand-in-hand.
“The strong, collaborative partnership with the Bahamas is critical to both North America and hemispheric security. Additionally, the partnership between the Bahamas and the US is a relationship based on trust, mutual benefit and mutual respect for sovereignty. This strong partnership is significantly demonstrated by US Northern Command’s, and US Special Operations Command North’s commitment for the successful execution of Exercise Marlin Shield.”
Acting RBDF Commander Captain Tellis Bethel reiterated that “the Marlin Shield training exercise complements the decentralisation strategy of the Defence Force, and will ensure that the Defence Force continues to build operational capacity through regional partner engagements.”
Exercise Marlin Shield, which lasts for two weeks - is the culmination of two years of planning conferences, exchanges and exercises
It comes on the heels of last month’s Coral Cays Exercise, which was a table top exercise discussing the RBDF role and responsibilities in the event of a mass migrant unrest, as well as a rehearsal drill.
Marlin Shield is described as “a bilateral, counter-terrorist one aimed at improving the interoperability context between the Defence Force and the US SOCNORTH”.
During the exercise, areas in and around New Providence, Eleuthera and Exuma will experience an increased military presence, particularly in the air and sea. The public are advised to pay heed to radio and broadcasted warnings about areas to avoid during the first two weeks in May.
