WHILE the Johnson’s Lady Truckers literally dominated the ladies’ division, the men’s division of the Bahamas Softball Federation’s BTC National Championships’ round robin was a topsy turvy one.
The New Providence champions Lady Truckers gave up a run in each of their games to finish atop the standings with a 3-0 win-loss record in the ladies’ division in the tournament played over the weekend in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.
Grand Bahama’s Folley’s Girls were second at 2-1, Andros’ Sagoma Navigators were 1-2 and Abaco’s Major Pains rounded out the field at 0-3.
On the men’s side, New Providence’s C&S Hitmen suffered a stunning 8-6 loss to Grand Bahama’s Central Chemical Sweepers, to take the top spot 2-1, the identical mark as the Abaco AG & Turf Bulldogs, whose only loss came at the expense of the Hitmen in a 8-1 decision.
Eleuthera’s Blue Water Jets took third place at 1-2, losing to both New Providence 4-1 and 1-0. The Sweepers were also 1-2 after getting shut out 7-0 by the Bulldogs and 12-0 by the Jets.
• Here’s a summary of the games played during the round robin:
Navigators 12, Major Pains 5: Vashti Hill had a perfect 2-for-2 day with four runs scored; Claudette Scott was 1-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored and Albertha Russell was 1-for-3 with two runs scored for Andros.
Candace Malone went 1-for-2 with a run and Creneya Thomas was 1-for-3 with a RBI in the loss.
Albertha Russell was the winning pitcher and Tessa Lewis got the loss.
Lady Truckers 16, Folley’s Girls 1: Khatrel Dorsett was 1-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored; Latonia Bowleg was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored; Shavette Taylor was 1-for-3 with four RBI and a run; Crystal Taylor was 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored and Nacara Curtis was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored in the win.
Tesheena Pinder got hit by a pitch with one out in the third and scored Grand Bahama’s only run on Edris Lightbourne’s RBI ground out.
Marvelle Miller was the winning pitcher on a two-hitter with a strike out. Salaika Williams was the loser.
Hitmen 8, Bulldogs 1: Martin Burrows went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs; Dino Sweeting was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored; Michael Ingraham was 1-for-1 with a RBI and a run and Alcott Forbes was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Lyle Sawyer led off the fifth with a single and with two-out, scored on an error for Abaco’s only run.
Forbes fired a one hitter with 11 strike outs to out-duel Sawyer, who gave up seven hits with 10 strike outs.
Jets 12, Sweepers 0: Van ‘Lil Joe’ Johnson was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored; Wade Weinburger Jr was 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored; Adney ‘the Heat’ Bethel was 2-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored and Micah Bethel was 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
Bethel ended up pitching a perfect game with 12 strike outs for the win. Darren Mortimer was the loser.
Folley’s Girls 7, Major Pains 3: Davonna Mackey was a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored; Tarah Evans was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored and Curtisha Albury was 1-for-1 with a RBI and a run scored in the win for Grand Bahama.
Kavantia Reckley was 1-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored for Andros.
Salaika Williams got the win on a one-hit with two strike out performance. Clifeina Smith was the loser.
Bulldogs 1, Jets 0: Nigel Bethel got on base on a one-out fielder’s choice and scored the only run in the game for Abaco on an error.
Lyle Sawyer threw a three-hitter with six strike out for the win. Adney Bethel got the loss on a one-hitter with six strike out.
Lady Truckers 12, Major Pains 1: Khatrel Dorsett was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored; Shavette Taylor was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored; Latonia Bowleg was 2-for-5 with two RBI and Crystal Evans was 3-for-3 with a RBI and three runs scored for New Providence.
Vashinell Hill led of the first inning with a single and scored the only run for Andros.
Marvelle Miller was the winning pitcher on a three-hitter with three strike outs. Albertha Russell got the loss on 12 hits.
Sweepers 8, Hitmen 6: Hakeem Stuart went 2-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored; Leon Cooper was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored and Roshen Ferguson was 1-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored in the win.
Philip Johnson went 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored; Michael Ingraham was 1-for-2 with a run scored and Dino Sweeting was 1-for-2.
Leon Cooper got the win on three hits with four strike outs. Martin Burrows got tagged with the loss.
“We started to hit and after we came alive, we just had to go for the win,” said Cooper, one of the country’s nstional team basketball players. “It was an exciting. It was a good game. I liked pitching in a game like that, even though I wasn’t the best pitcher on the team.”
Folley’s Girls 10, Navigators 9: Tied at 7-7 at the end of the fifth, Grand Bahama erupted for three runs in the extra inning in the sixth to hold on for the win. Andros came up with two in the bottom, but it wasn’t enough.
Dora Evans was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored; Davonnia Mackey was 3-for-4 with two runs and Shelly Morley was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Anthonece Williams was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored; Candice Smith was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Asharan Roberts was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Salaika Williams got the win in relief of starter Latoya McQueen. Albertha Russell was the loser.
Hitmen 4, Jets 1: C&S scored all four runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by Philip Johnson;s RBI single and Hilton Hosea’s two-run single as New Providence came back for the win.
Johnson finished 1-for-3 with a RBI and run scored and Hilton was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Wade Weinburger was 1-for-3 with a run scored. He had a two-run triple and stole home for the only run for Eleuthera.
Alcott Forbes tossed a four-haitter with seven strike outs for the win. Adney Bethel also gave up four hits with five strike outs.
Bulldogs 7, Sweepers 0: Tyler Russell went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored; William Weatherford was 2-for-2 with a RBI and run scored and Tavaughn Ferguson was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run in the win for Abaco.
Tyler Russell tossed a two-hitter with seven strike outs for the win. Darren Mortimer suffered the loss for Grand Bahama.
Lady Truckers 28, Major Pains 1: Shavette Taylor had a perfect 4-for-4 day with three RBI and three runs ; Crystal Taylor was 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs; Melinda Bastin was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs; Latonia Bowleg was 3-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored; Marvell Miller was 2-for-3 eith four RBI and three runs and Crystal Evans was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs for New Providence.
Miller gave up one hit and struck out four for the win. Tesa Lewis was the loser.
