CHAMPION Amateur Boxing Club continues its annual schedule with one of the most anticipated events on it’s calendar.

Weather permitting, the 23rd Annual L. Garth Wright Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing Tournament is scheduled for Saturday October 8 at the Wulff Road Boxing Square at 7pm.

CABC is one of the most highly regarded promoters of boxing development due to its longstanding tradition of hosting prestigious events for several decades.

The main event will feature the much acclaimed and decorated 2020 Olympic hopeful, Lennox Boyce facing off against Trey Davis out of Grand Bahama.

The event will also showcase a highly anticipated matchup between Daedae Eugena and Glovels Escament of Abaco.

Awards will be presented in the primary and junior divisions for best fight, most improved boxer, most outstanding boxer and the most coveted prize, the L Garth Wright Sr Trophy.

The event is expected to include fighters from Abaco Boxing Team, Freeport Boxing Team, Major Pain Boxing Club, Lion Heart Boxing Club and Strikers Boxing Club.

All amateur boxers and boxing clubs are invited to register and participate.

Sponsors for the event include the D’Albenas Agency, Wallce Whitfield and Co, Bahamas Vision Centre and Cedric Munnings.

CABC Director, Ray Minus Jr said he expects the trend of the tournament’s success to continue for this edition of the Golden Gloves.

“L Garth Wright was a great promoter and someone so very important to the Bahamian boxing game,” Minus Jr said. “Always a straight forward person and because doing business with him was always a pleasure we decided to name the tournament after him and we have continued this for more than two decades.”

He also said he expects the trend of the tournament’s success to continue for this edition of the Golden Gloves.

“So many boxers are always able to make their debuts and a lot of boxers were able to gain valuable experience and good position to represent the Bahamas in international boxing,” he said.

“We are trying to get more kids involved in the programme, that is our aim, Minus said.

“We are very excited about this event. Many kids are preparing who have not fought yet and are looking to make their debuts. So many successful good things came out of this programme and this show in particular, some of the biggest names in Bahamian boxing today. Even persons who went on to have thriving professional careers in all walks of life, not just in boxing. It has produced Olympic boxers, Commonwealth boxers and Bahamian champions and we are happy to be able to continue this event. We want to showcase everybody and really, really bring boxing together and get everybody involved in this tournament.”

The CABC director added that the many local events give hope to young boxers who can look to Tureano ‘Reno’ Johnson and Valentino Knowles, who now serves as a national team head coach and Carl Hield, all of whom came out of this same programme and have excelled on the international scene.

“We know that we can produce Olympic prospects because we have already done it, and it starts here,” said Minus Jr of Johnson, who competed in the 2008 Olympics.

“We feel like we can continue to keep these young men focused on the Olympics and give them the hope to achieve that goal of getting to the Olympics. Once they have the talent, we want to give them the opportunity.”
