COLLEGE basketball continues its preseason through various divisions in Canada and Bahamian players are setting the stage for the upcoming 2016-17 campaign.

The Holland College Hurricanes continue to be a pipeline for Bahamian talent with another pair set to lead the programme in Prince Edward Island, Canada in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association.

Roosevelt Whylly returns for another season and will be joined by senior national team member Abel Joseph as the newest member of the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes recently hosted a pre-season tournament and finished 2-0 after defeating St Foy and Mount Allison. They defeated St Foy 111-48, led by 18 points from Whylly.

The second game was a 101-72 victory over Mt Allison. Joseph would lead the way with a game high 24 points and added nine rebounds.

In a 102-92 loss to Dalhousie, Whylly scored 27 points, added nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and a blocked shot.

Joseph scored 10 points and added three rebounds and two assists off the bench in just 19 minutes.

Last season, Whylly helped lead the Hurricanes to a bronze-medal finish in the CCAA National Tournament and was named to the All-Tournament First Team.

Whylly ended the season averaging 20 points and nine rebounds per game.

Joseph earned an opportunity with the Hurricanes after an offseason at the national level where he averaged 11.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game in Panama.

The Hurricanes will be host of this year’s CCAA Men’s Basketball Championships.

Shamar Burrows looks to follow up his star studded prep career in his first season with the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks.

The Golden Hawks made their preseason debut with a pair of wins. They defeated Algoma 64-52 and Burrows added eight points off the bench.

In the following road trip, the Golden Hawks finished 1-2.

In an 87-63 loss to Manitoba, Burrows finished with 11 points.

Burrows graduated from Ridley College in Ontario, Canada where he led the programme to an unprecedented nationally ranked status.

Burrows and fellow Bahamian Livingston Bromwell helped the Tigers to highlight their season by claiming the Canadian Independent Schools Athletic Association championship and ended an impressive run of success by the St Michael’s College Blue.

The Bahamian pair also led the talented Tigers team to several tournament wins this past season, including the Dorland Tournament, Standard Tournament, CAIS Championship, The Can-Am Shootout and the Crusader Classic hosted in Grand Bahama over the winter holiday.

In addition to league play, Burrows also honed his game playing with the Grimsby Basketball Association GBA Elite travel team.
