A SEVERE weather warning has been issued for much of the Bahamas on Sunday afternoon by the Department of Meteorology.
The warning - from 11.30am to 3pm on Sunday - is in effect for North Andros, New Providence, Abaco, the Berry Islands, Eleuthera, Cat Island, Exuma, Long Island, Acklins and Crooked Island and adjacent waters.
The Department said observations and satellite imagery indicated large clusters of showers and thunderstorms across those islands.
"Some of these showers and thunderstorms could be strong to severe at times, generating strong gusty winds, dangerous lightning, heavy rain downpours, hail and the possibility of waterspouts or tornado activity," the alert read. "There is also the potential for flooding in flood-prone areas so caution should be taken to protect property.
"Residents in the warning areas should stay indoors and away from windows when conditions worsen. Residents should not seek shelter under trees or in water as these can become lightning conductors."
Boaters were also warned to seek safe harbour.
