THE recent revelation regarding BPL’s $1.5m dollar payout as authorised by Shane Gibson and former DPM Philip ‘Brave’ Davis reiterates the need for reformation of the electoral process.
We know that both of these men and indeed their political party are above reproach and no one should question the circumstances under which this payout was made, but few could argue that we must change the way we do things in this country. We must insist that legislation creates clear boundaries to ensure the governing party cannot use its position to create an advantage for itself going into an election. Transparency in financial contributions to political parties, limits in pre-election hirings, granting of contracts and payment of public service bonuses might significantly reduce the ability of corrupt politicians manipulating the system for their advantage.
While I am sure that our politicians can always be trusted to do the right thing and the BPL payout was above board, as a country we cannot afford to go down this road again.
