Three held over $1.6m drug seizure

THREE men are in police custody in connection with the discovery of $1.6 million worth of marijuana in Andros on Thursday.

The incident took place shortly before 6pm in the Mangrove Cay area.

According to Superintendent Jameal Ferguson, Head of the Drug Enforcement Unit, officers went to waters off Mangrove Cay after receiving an anonymous tip.

"Around 5.45pm DEU officers along with the police support unit, acting on information, along with officers from South Andros, went to waters in the Mangrove Cay area where they intercepted a 32-foot type vessel with three adults males onboard," Supt Ferguson said.

"The men, one Jamaican and two Bahamians were taken into police custody. While searching the vessel officers discovered a quantity of croker sacks and black duffle bags with a quantity of suspected marijuana men were arrested and brought to New Providence where they are expected to be charged."

The drugs weighed 1,606 pounds and have an estimated street value of $1,606,000.

The discovery comes a little over a week after police discovered three marijuana fields in Andros.

According to reports, DEU officers along with a DEA agent went to an area near Owens Town where they uncovered three marijuana fields. An estimated 4,000 marijuana plants were uprooted.

One week earlier, local officers and US agents uncovered as estimated 10,300 marijuana plants from two fields in the same area.

No arrests were made. Investigations are ongoing.

One must wonder why this country still continues to burn resources chasing marijuana shipments when weed is now being cultivated and sold legally in at least 1/4 of the United States. So now the other countries are dumping their products here. Spend these funds on substance abuse and drug education.

Why are we still arresting people for marijuana? What a waste of time resources. This could be a viable export industry but backward thinking has enshrined the Bahamas as a nation of followers.

CNN promotes a Chronic party (Rockymountainhigh) on it’s New Years National broadcasts celebrations and invites its viewers to take a pull on a chalice (kamoke) ad we still here chasing Jamaican lettuce. spend that money on schools and hospitals.

Jamaican Lettuce, a funny. In Jamaica, they are still arresting the little man, while the "big man" plots in Parliament to control the trade through selective legalization. That being said, the trade sometimes is not so innocent, as it most times involves the trafficking of guns from our beloved French-speaking neighbor. Look up "Guns for drugs". That's why the streets are getting so hot.

Also know that when these sloops land, typically, not everyone is innocent and desperate. Their enforcers are usually there. This is human trafficking.

California legalized marijuana today and is predicted to eventually generate $1 billion annually in local and state tax revenue!

Meanwhile, the Bahamas deep in debt, tourism, and banking failing with no end in sight, grabbing at techno straws continue to dig in with myopic stupidity.

Too stupid!

America was going broke trying to police and regulate marijuana. And it was the various federal agencies responsible for allowing illegal drugs in (just like they are involved in geogus to Mexico, Colombia and even here. Today a 1/2 once of marijuana is selling for $260. Persons over 21 can purchase an once $520 .00 and persons needing medical weed can buy 6 once’s for $3120.00. Remember Donald Trump has promised to repeal all laws making marijuana legal.

I do agree, however, drug enforcement and immigration and those sorts of people will continually have to justify their employment.

Also, the system is set up so the small grower has no chance, as he cannot meet the "standards" set. Let us say today Jan 1st, every illegal left the Bahamas, what would happen to the Immigration? They would have to downsize, right. Do you think people want to lose their job? So it is in their self-interest for the boats to keep coming with weed and people, sad but true.

Now it will be a fight between the’dtugs’, alcohol and tobacco companies. Obama warned not to legalize marijuana but to decriminalize it to a degree. Else big businesses will commercialize it and Careys bigger problem. Adding ingredients to make it more addictive for one and advertising to minors as they do indirectly with cigarettes and alcohol

What our government needs to do is legalize medical marijuanna for the general population. There are a host of medical conditions such as siezures and chronic pain that can be treated with no side effects thus reducing the the opioid addiction rate. In addition licenses should be given to a limited number of stake holders to sell marijuana products from areas designated marijuana retreats zones where users can congregate to legaly purchase the products. Such retreats zones should be established on every island and marketed in the tourism arena. The Bahamas need to get with the time in this area before we are left behind by our carribean competition. .

Obama brought unemployment down from 15% to 4.3%. He bailed out the banks and auto companies and put a stop check on the declining housing market, in addition to ensuring every American had access to Health Care. Trump is taking all the credit for the strengthening economy and the record setting stock market. He brought em employment down from 4.3% to 4.1%. He spent most of his first year trying to dismantle Obamacare and has signed a tax bill that will put billions in the hands of already cash flush companies and individuals while eliminating some tax breaks for low and middle income individuals. There is no guarantee Trumps tax cuts will trickle down or cause companies to bring their operations back to America. So where will The billions come from that Trump is proposing to rebuild America’s infrastructure? Where will the workers come from since 4% unemployment is considered full employment in an economy? Can Trump make America great again when some states are seeking to raise their minimum wage to $15 an hour compared to China and Japan where workers still earn pennies an hour and child labor is prominent? And what about the new threats from the president of North Korea. He claims his country now has missles to reach every part of the USA and the detonator for these weapons is always on his desk.
