AN Exuma church rector is encouraging local government members to be mindful of the fact that they are servants of the people and of God.

It was time for family, friends and well-wishers to show their support as the newly elected representatives of the local government district of Exuma were recently sworn in during a special ceremony.

The new group of local government members represent a cadre of successful businessmen and women who are committed to invest in and promote the growth and development of Exuma's communities.

Father Ethan Ferguson, rector of St Andrew's Parish, gave the charge for the occasion and reminded the representatives "that in order to be a true leader you must first be a servant".

"You have been called to a place of service not to fulfil your own agenda but rather embrace the opportunity to represent the people of Exuma who have elected you," said Father Ferguson.

He mandated the group to be fair and not show bias to family members or friends, especially as "we live in an unjust society."

Father Ferguson encouraged them "to be honest and uphold standards for the benefit of all; to possess good character and reputation, and to be humble, remembering that you, too, are a local who lives in the community."

He called on the representatives to treat Exuma's residents well and to always hear their requests.

Chief Councillor Godfrey Gray thanked his colleagues for electing him and assured them that with his 21 years of experience in local government he will work do his best to ensure that all settlements are further developed.

He also assured them that his team will partner with the central government for the betterment of Exuma and the Bahamas.

Magistrate Laquay V Laing then led the group in the oath-swearing and congratulated them.

Patterson Smith was sworn in as deputy chief councillor; Kendal McPhee as chairman of the East Township, and Clarence Ferguson as deputy chairman for the area.

Bradwin Hall was sworn in as chairman of the West Township, while Sherwin McPhee was named deputy chairman. Meanwhile Cecil Smith, Perry Rolle, Zhivargo McPhee and Pamela Braynen were made councillors. Other official Township members include Clifford Strachan, Anvil Lloyd, Dominic Rolle, Ricardo Rolle, Ervin Rolle and Janerese Curtis.

Rev Franklyn McKenzie, president of Exuma Christian Council; Superintendent Bradley Sands of the Royal Bahamas Police Force in Exuma, and Nevarro Bowe also joined the ranks of local government representatives.
