Open up solar power

EDITOR, The Tribune

Re: Solar Electricity Request for Proposal (RFP) in today’s Tribune.

We have read this story more than once recently, where the Minister of Works speaks about issuing an RFP for providing solar energy for BPL.

I am not a solar expert by any means but what we have heard for years now about “Net Metering” leads me to believe that we do not need a SINGLE supplier of Solar Energy, which a Request For Proposal suggests, so why would we not simply regulate (in some small way ) as many Solar Energy providers as may be interested in doing so, including the people living in a one room house who want to buy a few solar panels for themselves?

If you drive around the out islands and see the miles upon miles of electrical lines and poles, between settlements, you can quickly see the benefit of each settlement generating its own power.

Now that is a very simplistic view, but bigger is not necessarily better with this technology, and we know from experience how monopolies, particularly State owned Monopolies can go so awfully wrong.

Government needs to get out of the way and let the people go solar so that we can finally reduce BEC to a sustainable, efficient, alternative electricity supplier.

But, at current prices, it will only be available to the rich folks and businesses who can afford it. If government is serious about solarization then it would ensure that every new home built, including government housing schemes, include solar panels and other alternative energy sources. That way the cost of electricity comes down and only those who don't want solar or other alternatives or can't afford it will still be buying electricity from BPL/BEC. And the new electricity legislation allows for small scale reselling of excess electricity to BPL/BEC whenever URCA gets around to finalizing the scheme. Presumably the government is looking at the RFP process on a much bigger scale than a few rich folks selling their excess to BPL/BEC.
