THE Bahamas' youthful team of Iesha Shepherd, Sydney Clarke, Elana Mackey and Sierra Donaldson didn't advance out of the Americas Zone II Fed Cup tie after posting a 1-3 win-loss record last week in Panama City, Panama.
The team, captained by Chelsea Russell, had to play Barbados in their last game for a final ranking in the tournament. While Clarke won her singles 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) over Charise Slocombe, Shepherd lost 6-2, 2-6, 1-6 to Kiana Marshall. They didn't play the doubles as both teams ended up tied at 1-1.
The Bahamas came out of Group II with a 1-3 win-loss record in the four matches they played for third place. Peru went undefeated at 3-0 in the pool and Costa Rica came in second at 3-1.
Panama, the other team in the group, was winless at 0-3.
The Bahamas lost 3-0 to Peru and Costa Rica, but beat Panama 2-1 as Shepherd won her singles 6-1, 6-0 over Karen Esther Contreras. Clarke lost 6-1, 5-7, 3-6 to Rosaline Chavez Tello. Clarke and Shepherd then sealed the deal with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Chavez Tello and Daniela Diez.
