OLYMPIC quarter-milers Michael Mathieu and Andretti Bain pulled off victories, along with collegian Shaquania Dorsett, outside of their specialties to lead the Bahamas contingent of athletes in two different meets in Florida over the weekend.
Mathieu sprint double
In Tampa at the University of South Florida’s Bulls Invitational, Michael Mathieu dropped down from his specialty in the 400m to post a double win in the men’s 100 and 200m.
Mathieu, competing for Puma, opened up by taking the century in 10.29 seconds with Alfred Higgs third in 10.36 and Cameron Parker 12th in 10.94.Mathieu came back in the 200m and pulled off another win in 20.85, Higgs was eighth in 21.94 and Erold Farquharson, a junior at Florida State, was 15th in 22.29. Adrian Griffith was also in the event, but he didn’t finish. Farquharson also ran the third leg for Florida State as they came in fourth in the 4 x400m relay in 3:20.35.
On the women’s side, Grand Bahamian quarter-miler Shaquania Dorsett, a sophomore at Florida State, moved up to the 800m where she won the two-lap race in 2:16.57. Dorsett also anchored Florida State’s 4 x 400m relay team to a fourth place in 3:54.52.
Bain hurdles victory
In Orlando at the University of Central Florida’s Black and Gold Challenge, Andretti Bain returned to his original specialty, clocking 51.94 to take the men’s 400m hurdles. Avery Thompson, representing the University of the Bahamas, was third in 55.55.
Decathlete Ken Munnings competed in the individual events where he was fourth in the men’s high jump with a leap of 2.08 metres or 6-feet, 09.75-inches.
He was also third in the long jump with a leap of 7.08m (23-02.75) and got 11th in the shot with a toss of 12.08m (19.07.75).
Newly wed Maicel Uibo, the husband of Olympic gold medallist Shaunae Miller, contested the men’s shot put as well. He represented Speed Dynamics where he was fifth with 14.26m (46-09.50). Uibo is also a decathlete from Estonia.
In the men’s 100m, Robert Johnson of Speed Dynamics was 10th in 11.04; Aaron Cox of the UB was 17th in 11.34 and Stephen Newbold of Speed Dynamics got 27th in 12.02.
The men’s 200m saw Timothy Newbold of Speed Dynamics come through with 12th place in 22.41 and in the 400m, UB’s Michal Stuart got ninth in 49.53 and Mullings was 21st in 51.49, while Salathiel Anderson of Speed Dynamics got 31st in 59.16.
On the women’s side, UB’s Beyonce Scott was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.42m (17-09.50); eighth in the high jump with 1.58m (5-02.25) and 11th in the 100m hurdles in 15.36.
In the discus, Laquell Harris came in sixth with 38.59m (126-07) and she was eighth in the shot put with 12.80m (42-00).
On the track, Alexandra Strachan from UB was 11th in the 100m in 12.92.
In the 200m, Gabrielle Shannon from UB was tenth in 25.67 and team-mates Ronneica Ferguson was 13th in 26.03 and Bendgline Bocage was 24th in 27.68 and in the 400m, Antonishka Deveaux got 13th in 1:01.82.
The UB’s team of Antonishka Deveaux, Bendgline Bocage, Ronneica Ferguson and Laquell Harris ran 48.91 for fourth in the 4 x 100m relay.
