LUKE MAILLIS set a Bahamas national record for a CWT (constant weight) freedive this week with 48 metres (157 feet) at Dean’s Blue Hole, Long Island at the Vertical Blue 2017.

He was 14 seconds inside the permitted dive time of 1 minute 45 seconds for the attempt. A local, he confessed to being a little nervous before the attempt.

Constant weight is the common sportive depth discipline of freediving, because of the specific fins or monofins used. The freediver descends and ascends using his fins/monofin and/or with the use of his arms without pulling on the rope or changing his ballast; only a single hold of the rope to stop the descent and start the ascent is allowed.
