It was day filled with celebrations in Abaco last Sunday as Anglican Church members came together for a special church service to mark Mother’s Day.

“Mothers are one of the greatest gifts God has given mankind. With full responsibility for two Anglican churches in Marsh Harbor and Sandy Point, it was deemed an honour and privilege to espouse the mothers in the parish,” said Father Chester Burton, Anglican church rector.

In his sermon, he told the congregation that men and children should appreciate and cherish those mothers who are still living, as well as those who have gone to glory serving their Lord and maker. 

He asked that persons remember in prayer the cadre of mothers who once delivered yeoman services to the parish of St John’s and the wider community of Abaco, as these are considered the island’s precious pearls and genuine gems. 

“Their presence, prayer and sacrifice have left an indelible mark on the hallowed edifices that still remain standing to this day. Because of their continuous efforts and determination, the church doors would stay open and remain a vibrant component in the tapestry of Abaco,” said Father Burton.

The Anglican church rector also expressed that if it were not for some of the mothers organising and managing events on the island such as fish fries and cook-outs, many church doors in the modern-day Bahamas would be closed and remain closed.

After the sermon, Father Burton and his parish administrator, Shelly Austin, took the initiative to distribute care packages to the sick and shut-in members of the parish to show appreciation of the tireless and stellar work as mothers over the past few decades.

“Many of whom were touched emotionally by the outpouring of love and appreciation and even shed a tear.

“I strongly advised the congregation to let people know, and mothers especially, that you love them.

“Also be kind to them not only on Mother’s Day, but every day. The saying is it is everyone’s desire to receive their flowers and salutations while they are alive and kicking and not while they are dead and gone,” said Father Burton.
