US tobacco firm to create 50 jobs in Grand Bahama

UP to 50 new jobs will be created by mid-2018 through a US tobacco manufacturer establishing its overseas hub in Grand Bahama, it was disclosed yesterday.

Wind River Tobacco Company, in a joint announcement with the Government, said the island would become its base for all international distribution and manufacturing activities.

"Our newly renovated facilities in Freeport will house the first phase of our enterprise where we will process, and pack, tobacco-based consumer products solely for export across the globe," Wind River said in a statement.

"This first phase will require 25-30 new employees, for which the recruitment campaign has already began. The second phase, which involves substantial capital investment from our part, is planned for the end of the first quarter of 2018. We will be acquiring additional facilities to house this manufacturing operation, and an additional 10-20 new, highly skilled local jobs will be added."

Wind River said it was attracted to Freeport by its free trade zone status under the Hawksbill Creek Agreement, which sought to establish Grand Bahama as a logistics/distribution/manufacturing hub via its tax advantages and proximity to the US and key international trading routes.

The company's investment was much-trumpted in the joint announcement by a Minnis administration eager for some good economic news on Grand Bahama, especially when it comes to the creation of jobs given the Grand Lucayan's continued closure.

"Our goal is to make Grand Bahama the capital of the Bahamas for industries and technology," said Kwasi Thompson, minister of state for Grand Bahama. "With our upcoming Investment Unit, companies like Wind River Tobacco will find the ease of doing business in Grand Bahama significantly increased."

The Minister also urged the manufacturer/distributor to partner with Bahamian-owned businesses on Grand Bahama. "I encourage you to employ the best standards and practices in your business," he added.

"Seek out smaller businesses and entrepreneurs to provide you with ancillary services and support. Purchase a second home.

"Let's continue to work together to bring economic revitalisation to Grand Bahama."
