A severe lack of critical thinking in education

EDITOR, The Tribune.

I am in favour of The Bahamas helping out Dominica.

In fact I am hoping that along with their students, they also send teachers.

Hopefully some of heir intelligence, class and work ethic can rub off on some of these teachers here in Nassau.

I have been intimately involved with teachers over the years and it is apparent to me, that there is a severe lack of critical thinking going on in education. Teachers cannot give to students, what they do not have.

You cannot teach children to think critically, if you are not a critical thinker.

Teachers have been getting raises, but what do we as a country have to show for it.

We have “D” average students, because we have “D” average teachers. It is a bad situation, their leader is a rude, controversial P.E. teacher, who from my view point, has not made any significant contribution to improving education.

Jeff Lloyd must demonstrate that he is more than just a radio talk show host, who solves the world problems behind a microphone.

He must attack this problem at the point of contact where the teacher meets the students in the class-room.

Students today live in a technological age.

They are influenced by more negativity than any previous generation.

Now more than ever they need thinking skills, reason and logic.

I ask the Bahamian people – are you comfortable that those that stand in the front of our children, can teach these skills? Are they technologically savvy? Welcome Dominicans!
