A Haitian man was charged in the Freeport Magistrate’s Court for illegal landing, three weeks after arriving in the Bahamas.

James Dorlan, 25, appeared in Court Three before Magistrate Rengin Johnson last week where he pleaded guilty to the offence.

Dorlan was arrested by immigration officers on March 29. He informed officers he arrived in the Bahamas three weeks ago illegally by boat from Haiti and remained in the country without legal status.

He was ordered to pay the maximum fine of $300 or serve three months in prison. Magistrate Johnson ordered Dorlan be deported on payment of the fine or completion of his custodial sentence.

Dorlan paid the fine and was handed over to Department of Immigration officials for deportation.
