The Susan G Komen Race for the Cure series, the world's largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer, comes to Nassau this weekend. As part of Sunshine Insurance's Marathon Bahamas Race Weekend, the 5k race will start on Saturday at 7am.
The route takes participants from Montagu Beach to Paradise Island. There will be two water stops on the route with enthusiastic and encouraging cheerleaders. Participants are asked to plan on arriving at the start site area no later than 6.15am. Parking is available at Montagu, office buildings' parking in the area and at Harbour Bay. Limited parking is available on Paradise Island and is available until 6.30am. Car pooling is encouraged.Established in 1982, the Komen Race for the Cure Series has grown from one Race with 800 people in Dallas to a global series of more than 140 races with 1.7 million people participating in four continents. Since its inception, Komen has funded more than $889 million in research, more than $1.95 billion in medical care, community and provider education and psycho-social support. Komen focuses on supporting those with the fewest resources: uninsured, under-insured and low-income women and men unable to access care.
The Komen Bahamas event is an opportunity for people of all ages to celebrate survivorship, remember those who have lost their fight to the disease and raise awareness about a health issue that affects thousands of women and men in the Bahamas. One hundred per cent of the net proceeds raised in the Bahamas remain in the country.
By participating in the Susan G Komen Bahamas Race for the Cure, organisers said, you will experience an event that has changed the way the world views breast cancer.
"You can make a difference as you celebrate survivorship, honour those who have lost their battle, and most importantly, raise funds and awareness for the fight against this life-threatening disease," organisers said.
The 3.1-mile race welcomes people of all ages and fitness levels, from walkers to elite runners.
