GRAND Bahama police are investigating the death of a woman who fell from the balcony of the Carnival Elation cruise ship early Friday morning.

According to the cruise line, the woman fell down several decks and died while the ship was out to sea.

The Carnival Elation had departed Thursday from Jacksonville, Florida on a four-day cruise to the Bahamas.

The ship's intinerary includes stops in Freeport and Nassau before its return to its ship terminal in Jacksonville.

“A guest fell from her balcony to several decks below,” read a statement from Carnival Cruise Line.

“The ship’s medical team responded immediately, but, unfortunately, she passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with the deceased and her family.”

"The incident was reported to all proper authorities and CARE Team support was offered to fellow travelers and her family," it added.
