France 4-3 Argentina
(Mirror.co.uk) Kylian Mbappe scored two goals in four second-half minutes to send France into the World Cup quarter-finals with a thrilling 4-3 win over Argentina on Saturday.
For the first-time ever a World Cup match ended 4-3 over 90 minutes, and the encounter in Kazan certainly didn't disappoint.
An enthralling contest saw goal-of-the-tournament contenders from both Angel Di Maria and Benjamin Pavard and even an improbably dramatic finale after Sergio Aguero's injury-time effort gave Argentina hope.
But Mbappe, the €200million PSG sensation, still only 19, proved the difference with a magnificent individual display.
He netted France's third goal in the 64th minute and sealed the win four minutes later with a cool finish to set up a quarter-final clash with either Uruguay or Portugal.
Benjamin Pavard also netted a fine strike for France to level the scores at 2-2 after Antoine Griezmann's 13th minute penalty had opened the scoring.
Argentina had briefly led 2-1 for nine minutes early in the second half, after Angel Di Maria's fine strike in the 41st minute and a goal from Gabriel Mercado.
Substitute Sergio Aguero added a third in stoppage time but the Albiceleste head home, and Les Bleus move on.
Uruguay 2-1 Portugal
Edinson Cavani's sensational strike dumped Portugal out of the World Cup.
The Paris Saint-Germain stiker curled home a second half winner after previously heading his side ahead in the early stages of the game.
Pepe, the experienced centre-back, had converted from a corner to level the game before Cavani's wonder strike.
As a result, Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup dream is over - as he is likely to retire before the next running of the tournament.
Sunday’s round of 16 games:
Spain 1-1 Russia AET Russia win 4-3 on penalties
They weren't meant to make it out of the groups, but they did.
And they weren't meant to see off Spain, but they have.
Hosts Russia are into the World Cup quarter-finals after a resolute display led to them holding the 2010 winners after 120 minutes, before dumping them out of the competition on penalties in Moscow.
Russia keeper Igor Akinfeev saved Koke's and Iago Aspas' spot kicks in their first ever penalty shootout to send the hosts through following a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes.
Spain, who have never beaten a host at World Cups or Euros, went ahead after 12 minutes when 38-year-old Sergei Ignashevich bundled into Spain captain Sergio Ramos at the far post, knocking a free kick in with his heel for the 10th own goal of the tournament.
The 2010 world champions controlled the game with their slick passing but did little more, failing to register a shot on target in the first half.
And when Gerard Pique gave away a penalty with a needless handball, Artem Dzyuba coolly buried his third goal of the tournament.
A frustrating second half with few chances led to extra-time, as Spain registered 75 per cent possession and eventually over 1000 passes but did little with any of it.
Rodrigo almost scored a stunning individual effort, but was denied, leading to penalties, where Akinfeev made himself the hero.
Russia will now face either Denmark or Croatia in the last eight.
Croatia 1-1 Denmark AET Croatia win 3-2 on penalties
Croatia have perhaps been the outstanding team at the World Cup finals so far.
But they were so close to throwing their chances of success in a competition that is opening up for them in the bin after a fearful display against Denmark.
Eventually, keeper Daniel Subasic was the hero as they bagged a quarter-final spot, saving three penalties in a shootout win following a 1-1 draw,
Having looked so secure in their opening three matches, it took the Danes less than a minute to rock them when they went into the lead from a long throw.
The Croatian defence failed to deal with Knudsen's ball into the penalty area and after Thomas Delaney had got a touch, defender Mathias Jorgensen pounced to score his first senior international goal from close range.
However, the lead lasted just three minutes when Mandzukic was first to react as the ball ricocheted across the Danish penalty area to fire past keeper Kasper Schmeichel and level the score.
A disjointed match followed, where Denmark impressed after smart tactical changes from Are Hariede.
Luka Modric had the chance to win it from the spot in extra-time, but was denied by Kasper Schmeichel.
Modric did score in the shootout, and when Nicolai Jorgensen missed from the spot, Ivan Rakitic slid home the winner.
