FOR another year, Sean Bastian will provide an avenue for many youngsters to experience college life at the University of the Bahamas as they participate in the 12th annual Sports Summer Camp.
Designed for boys and girls between the ages of eight and 13, the camp will run daily from June 25 to July 20 between the hours of 9am and 2pm.
"What we have been doing over the last 12 years is to encourage and motivate the youngsters in the fundamental sporting skills set in basketball, swimming, track and field and soccer.
"We have a new swimming pool that was just recently renovated with heaters, which is our number one attraction. Our whole objective is to try to make sure that the kids have a wonderful time engaging in a college atmosphere at the university."
Bastian said they try to ensure that the campers are properly instructed in the four disciplines so that they would become their first options when they venture into high school.
During each daily session, Bastian said the campers will rotate from one sporting station to the other in a hour frame as they are taught by a number of instructors, led by Charlene 'Swish' Smith, one of the members of the Athletic Department at UB. He noted that the campers will also get to benefit from the services of some of the top student-athletes in the various sporting disciplines, who compete for the UB Mingoes.
"We have a very safe environment where the campers can come and be informed by a number of instructors," Bastian said. "We also take them on a number of field trips every Friday as we provide an avenue to enjoy themselves off the campus."
The cost for the four weeks is $190, but for those who only wish to do three weeks, it's $165, or $135 for two weeks or $110 for just one week.
"We have a number of campers who are returning for their third and fourth years," Bastian said. "And we've noticed that those who are returning bring along a family member.
"But we welcome all parents who are looking for a wholesome sporting activity in a safe and sound environment for their children to come out and participate in the camp."
