In 2004, doctors diagnosed Minerva Kemp McIntosh with leukaemia and gave her less than six months to live. Now, 14 years later, Minerva is still here and still fighting. She has already beaten the cancer twice and is now going for a third round with the help of her friends and fans.
This month, her family is hosting a benefit concert in aid of her medical expenses. "This is My Story, This is My Song: An Evening of Music, Storytelling and Good Old-Fashioned Fun" will showcase the life of the exemplary Grand Bahamian, who is a singer, activist and banker. It will feature two of Nassau's hottest bands, Visage and Vice-Versa, and be held on November 23 at the Grand Lucayan Ballroom.
Ms McIntosh is the daughter of world class entertainer Johnny Kemp Sr and this concert in her honour promises to be a memorable occasion.
After her initial diagnosis in 2004, Minerva underwent treatment and her cancer went into remission, and she was able to live a healthy life.
Ten years later, in 2014, her cancer returned and again she was able to beat the odds and astounded the doctors with her ability to bounce back. One doctor commented that she was a "miracle" as most leukaemia patients did not survive their diagnosis as long as she did.
In 2017, the cancer returned once again and this time it has been more aggressive than the previous two times. From November 2017 to now, Minerva has been undergoing chemotherapy and has been travelling to the US to receive treatments.
Known for her star quality voice, Minerva has been singing in the Grand Bahama community for decades. During her 30-year career in banking, she has touched the lives of many Grand Bahamians. She is respected and admired for her generosity and good heart.
"Her influence has not only been felt in her professional life, but also through her community involvement as an active member of the Calvary Temp Church, Christ the King and G B Family Worship Centre. She has fulfilled her role as a pastor's wife with grace and humility," said her family in a statement.
Additionally, as a Rotarian and past president of the Rotary Club of Lucaya, Minerva has embodied the tenets of Rotary and continuously puts "service above self".
"Minerva has always given the Grand Bahama community, asking for nothing in return. Now, the Grand Bahama community has an opportunity to give to one who has unselfishly given of her time, talents and financial resources to help individuals and organisations in need," said her family.
Corporate Grand Bahama and individuals are welcomed to sponsor the event. For sponsorship details, contact 448-8097.
