JARON Cornish’s late game scoring flurry lifted the Stony Brook Seawolves back into the win column to highlight play from Bahamian basketball players at the NCAA Division I level.
Cornish scored seven of his game high 15 points in the final eight minutes to help the Seawolves win 72-65 over Norfolk State.
“We were down and kept chipping away. We went offence-defence and made some big stops and hit enough free throws to have a big enough cushion,” said Seawolves head coach Jeff Boals.
Neither team had a lead of more than five in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Then there was an 8-2 spurt, capped by a Cornish layup, to push the Stony Brook lead to 14-9 at the 13:37 mark of the half.
Stony Brook would take the lead into the locker room at 41-38 but coming out in the second half, Norfolk State went up four at 47-43 with just over 4:30 into the half.
Cornish ended his team’s final second half rally for good with a three pointer at the 2:10 mark.
Cornish is averaging 7.5 points and a team high 4.3 assists per game.
Radshad Davis and the Texas-Arlington Mavericks also rebounded from their first loss of the season with a 68-59 win over California-Davis.
Davis finished with 12 points and had a personal bounce back game after he scored a season low two points in a loss to Texas A and M Corpus Christi.
UTA was able to overcome just 26.9-per cent shooting (7-26) from the field in the 2nd half.
The Mavericks also forced UC Davis into 18 turnovers and converted those into 21 points compared with just 12 points off UTA giveaways by the Aggies.
“I’m so proud of our team and the way we responded. Every single guy had a big play in the game. We showed toughness, we showed experience, we showed that we learned from our mistakes and built on that,” Chris Ogden said. “I can’t think of a situation where I can be any more proud, or have it be any more of a team win.”
Travis Munnings and the ULM-Monroe Warhawks lost 80-59 to the No.11 Michigan State Spartans.
Munnings scored just five points but grabbed a team high 12 rebounds.
The Spartans led 35-29 at the half but opened the second on an 18-6 run.
“Our team played a good first half and really competed well,” ULM head coach Keith Richard said. “To hang with Michigan State for 20 minutes is a good feather in our cap and a positive we can take back with us to Louisiana.”
Charles Bain and the Robert Morris Colonials won both games at the National College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic after their 81-72 win over the Stetson Hatters last night. They won 68-59 over Mississippi Valley State in round one.
