In an effort to recognise its youth congregation, members of the Southside Christian Church International this year once again hosted a special back-to-school Sunday service.

Shantell Bernadin, a pastor's assistant at Southside Christian, told Tribune Religion that the event, "Back-to-School at Southside" was the idea of the church's pastor, Dr Judy L McIntosh-Smith, who envisioned a service where students would be encouraged to excel academically.

"Being concerned about the country's national grade average, she decided to establish a programme and incentives to push Southside's children to maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 or above. Back-to-School was initiated in 2008 at Southside. The event highlights those children who achieved the 3.0 GPA. They are rewarded in different ways and given gifts, certificates or trophies. The day is made even more special for them by treating them to goodies," said Shantell.

She said the church is very proud of its high achievers, especially with the numbers increasing each year. She said Dr McIntosh-Smith was the coordinator of the back-to-school initiative for many years, but has since passed on the task to Yolanda Johnson.

"Our children can excel academically with the help and partnership of parents and teachers of the church. Dr Judy's intention was not just to give the children school items, but to encourage them in academic excellence. 'Back-to-School at Southside' is important because parents and students alike are motivated to continue working towards academic excellence. Those who may not have achieved as highly are encouraged and inspired to work harder so they are a part of the next year's celebration," said Shantell.

At the recent service, Shantell said some students were allowed to lead the service. Others expressed themselves through poetry and one major highlight was the presentation of the Dr Judy L McIntosh-Smith Academic Excellence Award, which was given to Daleyah Bowe.
