MABELINE Miller, the assistant secretary of the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA), was elected to serve as the interim chief executive officer with full oversight of the upcoming annual general meeting and election of officers.

Miller, the mother of Olympic 400m gold medallist, “Golden Girl” Shaunae Miller-Uibo, won the post 9-8 over BAAA first vice president Tonique Williams during the voting procedure by the executives last week.

In the lead up and execution of the AGM and elections November 23-24 at Thomas A Robinson National Stadium, Miller will head a committee that includes Williams, Philippa Willie and Winston Marshall.

“After the election, whoever is voted in as the president will have the right to appoint their own CEO,” Miller said.

“But for now, the IAAF (International Amateur Athletic Federation) constitutes that we must have a CEO in place before the elections.”

Even though it’s only an interim term, Miller said she’s delighted to pioneer the way, especially as a woman, in the newly created position that is mandated by the IAAF, the worldwide governing body for the sport.

“For the past two terms, I have been serving as the assistant secretary to the general secretary,” Miller said.

“In the absence of the general secretary, I would act as the general secretary.

“The work is a little different than what I am doing right now. It’s a good feeling, but the workload is basically the same.”

In her new role, Miller will have the responsibility of keeping all of the BAAA’s members informed about the elections and getting everything prepared.

“The track and field season is down right now, so there’s nothing much to do,” Miller said. “There’s nothing pending for the BAAA. I’ve always had access to the IAAF website for the BAAA so as those communications continue to come in, I will answer those.

“But the main thing is to prepare the BAAA and the membership for the elections.”

While there is an office manager in Ann Thompson, Miller will oversea that operation. Miller has indicated that she won’t be seeking any positions during the elections. Her husband, Shaun, is the current president of the Coaches Association.

The BAAA’s elections will begin at 9:30 am on Saturday, November 24. It will follow the AGM that will take place on Friday at 6 pm when the president and treasurer reports will be made.

The deadline for nominations is set for 30 days prior to the elections. There has been a lot of interest swirling about some of the persons who are expected to be vying for the various positions.

Drumeco Archer, the current secretary general, has already indicated that he will be challenging incumbent president Rosamunde Carey for the top spot. And Grand Bahamian Ravanno Ferguson is looking to challenge Tonique Williams for the first vice president spot.

The BAAA is a fraud .............. There should be a democratically elected Sports Council representative from each major Bahamian island that sit on this "national" council that oversees athletics in this country ......... That is why ALL these so-called "national" sports and civic associations and federations are frauds.

They do not represent anyone outside of Nassau and Freeport ........... how can they be called "national"?????? The Government is complicit in this sad state of national sports governance.
