THE 19th annual Barbados International Judo Tournament and the third CARIFTA Judo Championships were held in Bridgetown, Barbados, on Saturday, December 7.

The Bahamas placed sixth out of 10 countries in an overall tournament placement, though having the smallest contingent, but competed with impeccable results.

Daniel and Alexander Strachan, dubbed the "Judo Twins," fought in the CARIFTA individual under 21 men's division at 81 kg (combined with the 90 kg division).

Alexander demonstrated that he rightly earned his position as reigning Bahamas national junior judo champion, winning all of his matches in fine gold medal form, inflating the price for victory for his sibling Daniel who secured a bronze medal after having lost to Alexander his brother and one other competitor.

In the team competition, Alexander sustained three unfortunate injuries but perseverance, dedication and discipline secured him the silver medal, thus saluting his technical team comprising of the strength and conditioning coach, proud parents Mr and Mrs Anzlo Strachan for their untiring support.

The judo twins are students at CC Sweeting Senior High School, and started their judo training at the All-Star Family Centre with sensei D'Arcy Rahming, president of the Bahamas Judo Federation.

Extended training was provided by sensei Carlos Hechevarria, a Naiwassa coach (at a training workshop this summer) with Olympian, Dr Rhadi Ferguson and currently training with 6th Degree black belt, sensei Mickey Munnings of Eastwood Judo Club.

The twins combine their overall success to their close-knit family, Believers Gospel Chapel family and the confidence of life skills provided through their involvement in the "Gentlemen's' Club."
