The Bahamas Development Bank (BDB) yesterday unveiled the first beneficiary of its new apprenticeship programme, which is named in honour of its first managing director, Warren Logan-Rolle.
K Peter Turnquest, deputy prime minister, speaking at a press conference to honour Octovia Green, said: “Mr Rolle is a key part of the bank’s history, having been its first managing director from 1978 to 1988.
“Mr Rolle also served as financial secretary between 1990 and 1993, and has represented The Bahamas on the international stage as director and alternate governor of the Caribbean Development Bank, alternate governor of the Inter-American Development Bank, and alternate governor of the World Bank.”
He added: “The apprenticeship programme is an extension of the values of the BDB and Mr Rolle. In order to cultivate the next generation of Bahamian leaders, the ambitious youth of today must be supported.
“Under the programme, the BDB will provide full tuition and fees for a high school graduate to attend the University of The Bahamas. The apprentice will have the opportunity to work in the bank in a paid position and gain exposure to develop skills in finance, economics, accounting and business administration.”
Dave Smith, the BDB’s managing director, said: “BDB designed the apprenticeship programme to target young people just like Octovia who are academically sound, challenged and deserving of a ‘hand up’. Octovia displays an indomitable spirit, and so did Mr Warren Logan-Rolle during his tenure with BDB.”
