The Family Island teams began play yesterday in the 37th annual Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic and it was business as usual for the teams from Grand Bahama.
Highlighting the action at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium was the newly crowned St George’s Jaguars, who tore apart the visiting Patrick J Bethel from Abaco, 62-22.
Coach Darryl Sears had two players in double figures as Shavaul Butters came up with 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals and Samuel Pinder added 10 points with three assists and two steals.
The tournament defending champions Tabernacle Baptist Falcons got breezed through their opener with a 55-36 decision over the Bahamas Elite, who finally got to play in the tournament after their controversial forfeiture win over the St Anne’s Blue Waves on Monday.
For the Falcons, Joshua Dames exploded for 18 points with four steals, two rebounds and two assists. He was the only player in double figures.
Ethan Munroe followed with nine points, four assists, two rebounds and two steals.
Bahamas Elite was led by Collin Storr with a game high 19 points and five rebounds.
In a nail-biting affair, the Jack Hayward Wildcats held off Gateway Christian Academy 36-34 and the Eight Mile Rock Bluejays routed Central Eleuthera 58-24.
Also, Agape Christian Academy got in the winner’s circle with their 57-45 victory over Akapheran Academy.
Meanwhile in a showdown between New Providence schools, the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association champions Doris Johnson Mystic Marlins knocked off the CR Walker Knights 53-31.
The tournament continues today.
