A MATCHUP between a pair of Bahamians in a double overtime thriller highlighted the weekend of play in NCAA Division I basketball.
The Sun Belt Conference game between Radshad Davis’ University of Texas - Arlington Mavericks and Travis Munnings’ University of Louisiana - Monroe Warhawks saw the Mavericks emerge with a 91-86 win.
Davis finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists in a season high 33 minutes while Munnings had his third double double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Mavs improved to 14-15, 9-6 in conference play to tie for fourth, while the Warhawks fell to 14-12, 7-7 in conference play and are tied for fifth.
It was the second double overtime win for the Mavs this month and third for the season.
“I’m really proud of our guys, our mindset and intensity to start the game was where it needed to be. It’s hard when you control the game for as long as we did to have a team come back and take the lead, but we responded well to that. Our maturity, our toughness and our competitiveness to get that done was big-time,” Mavs head coach Chris Ogden said.
Davis has scored in double figures in seven of his last 12 games, including a season high 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists in a February 2 loss to Louisiana.
Jaron Cornish had another stellar performance on senior night and helped his Stony Brook Seawolves rebound from a rivalry loss with a blowout win.
Cornish finished with 13 points, six rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocked shots in the Seawolves 81-53 win over the Maine Black Bears. The senior point guard is averaging 14 points per game in his last five contests.
After the Seawolves were down 16-14 with 8:44 to play, Cornish started the run with a three with 8:37 to go in the half. When the clock reached zeros, Stony Brook had a 20-point halftime lead.
“Really proud of our guys. I think we did a great job sharing the basketball. Their zone bothered us in the first game, but we made a concerted effort of getting the ball inside then out and we had 21 assists. When the ball goes in from three, it makes the job a little easier,” Stony Brook head coach Jeff Boals said.
The Seawolves have scored 80 or more points in three of the team’s last six games in the month of February. The 28-point win is the largest for the Seawolves this season against Division I opposition.
Charles Bain and the Robert Morris Colonials won a pair of games over the weekend to conclude the home portion of its regular season schedule and improved to 15-14 overall and 10-6 in the Northeast Conference.
Bain finished with four points and four rebounds in a 62-49 loss over the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds and seven points, five rebounds in a 67-62 win over the St Francis Brooklyn Terriers.
Shalonda Neely finished with five points, three rebounds and three assists in her Jacksonville Dolphins’ 69-55 win over the NJIT Highlanders.
