THE Lady Defenders finally snapped the Scottsdale Vixens’ dominance of the New Providence Volleyball Association by winning the league title at the DW Davis Gymnasium on Friday.
The Lady Defenders were joined by their men’s team, the Defenders, who also won the title over the National Fence Intruders.
Both series went right down to the wire in the fifth and deciding games of their respective championship series.
The Lady Defenders, a team that was in the making 10 years ago to reach this point of maturity, won the clincher in three sets - 25-15, 25-14 and 25-15.
Sari Albury, Je’Nae Saunders and Terae Sweeting led the 1-2-3 punch for the Lady Defenders, coached by Jason Saunders and Margaret ‘Muggy’ Albury.
The Vixens, coached by McKlyn Rolle and Laval Sands, got their leadership from veteran Jackie Conyers, Cheryse Bain and Melinda Bastian.
In the men’s clincher, the Defenders had to go to the full five sets before they prevailed. The set scores were 18-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22 and 15-10.
The Defenders, also coached by the combo of Jason Saunders and Margaret Albury, relied on the strong performances from Kyle Wilson, Jamaal Ferguson and Lorenzo Williams to earn their title.
The Intruders, coached by Lloyd ‘Ratty’ Davis and Glen Rolle, was led by Prince Wilson, Dellan Brown and Donavon Wilmott.
